Jennifer began acting when she was in elementary school. At the age of nine, she had her first film appearance in a non-speaking role for Death of a Stranger. At 14, she attended summer acting workshops at the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center in New York. She then landed a role in the movie The Young Runaways (1978), and made an appearance in an episode of Baretta (1975), which earned her a Screen Actors Guild membership at the age of sixteen.

During the late 70s and early 80s, Leigh had guest-starring and starring roles on several television shows and TV movies. She dropped out of Pacific palisades High School when she played a major role in the film Eyes of a Stranger (1981).
